C2247/CGP1: Geikie Island Crown Game Preserve

IMPORTANT: This policy report relates to an overlay land use designation, and it contains land use direction that supplements and/or modifies the primary land use direction for the associated area. The overlay and primary policy reports should be read in conjunction with each other.

DESCRIPTION:

Geikie Island is located in the north central part of Lake Nipigon. It was established as a Crown Game Preserve in 1965. It provides important woodland caribou habitat including migration routes, calving and staging areas.

An Ecological Land Use and Resource Management Strategy will guide future management of this area when completed.

This portion of the Crown Game Preserve is located within the Lake Nipigon Conservation Reserve. The Conservation Reserve (see Policy Report C2247) provides the primary land use intent and management direction for this area. The land use intent and management direction for the Crown Game Preserve, as outlined below, amends or supplements the primary direction.

This area is located within the Lake Nipigon Basin Signature Site, one of 9 such areas featured in the Ontario’s Living Legacy Land Use Strategy (1999). Signature Sites are identified for their range of natural and recreational values and their potential to contribute to future recreation and tourism.

LAND USE INTENT:

Geikie Island was established as a Crown Game Preserve in 1965. It forms an important part of a system of designated lands to protect caribou calving, migration and staging areas. The Land Use Strategy (July 1999) indicates the intention to retain its Crown Game Preserve status.

This area will also be managed consistent with the policies for the Lake Nipigon Conservation Reserve (C2247).

MANAGEMENT DIRECTION:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Note: MNR will consider the Land Use Intent and Management Direction outlined in this policy report when reviewing applications for permitted activities that require licences, leases, permits, or other forms of approval. The review of individual applications involves the consideration of a variety of factors and requirements on a site-specific basis in addition to land use policy.
